  • 1984 Summer Olympic Games, USA Today~As the junior member of the USA Today Olympics team assigned to the women's 3000 meter, I had been positioned at the less desirable turn 4 of the Coliseum track, which was in shaded light in the late afternoon and far from the finish line. No one could anticipate that Mary Decker's infamous on the track collision with rival Zola Budd would happen in just this spot. Despite her famous mishap, Decker Slaney set 36 U.S. and 17 world records during her career and is considered one of America's greatest woman athletes.

  • ~I made this photograph shortly after the mural was completed in 1984 while I was in L.A. to cover the Summer Olympic Games. It remains one of my favorite "found" images.
